EERA President’s Letter

Etowah Education Retirees Association (EERA) would like to extend a special invitation for you to join the association during the 2015-2016 year. EERA is “The Voice of Etowah Education Retirees” and we need your voice to keep our interests in front and center of the decision makers of our state. As you know there are many changes in education in Alabama; some good and some not so good! The more members we have, the GREATER OUR VOICE.

EERA invites you to attend its six meetings, enjoy our informative and interesting programs, socialize with old and new new friends, and for $10 enjoy a great catered meal! We meet the second Thursday of September, October, November, January, February, and April at 11:30 am at the Senior Activity Center in Gadsden.

Community Service is a vital part of our professional organization. Last year our members volunteered over 5,000 hours – a value of $104,158.45 – in service through church, local projects, civic, health, education, and other worthy projects. It’s a great way to stay involved in Etowah County’s improvements.

EERA’s annual dues are only $10 per year. At least half of each member’s dues funds schlarships for two area students. Dues are a small investment for the benefits everyone receives.

It takes all public education retirees working together to maintain the benefits we have earned. Every person who receives a check from the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) needs to join EERA and AERA. We need a strong voice! in the words of David Bronner and Dr. Paul Hubbert, “If you don’t do anything, nothing will change.” Join with us as we work to protect the benefits we have earned!

Debbie C. Landers, EERA President

Honoring Our Oldest Retirees

At our November meeting (November 13th), EERA would like to honor our oldest retirees. If you have been retired 20 or more years, we would love to have your feedback on the following questions. Your responses will be highlighted at our November meeting.

You may respond one of two ways:

1. Send your answers to Debbie Landers-Scott, P.O. Box 1084, Gadsden AL 35902 or her home address which is in your EERA Member Handbook.

OR

2. Send your answers by email to debbielscott@bellsouth.net or to etowaheducationretirees@gmail.com.

Questions:

1. How many years were you active in education and what were your job experiences?

2. Recall one of your most memorable educational experiences while an active educator.

3. When you look back at the students at the beginning of your service compared to the the end of your career, how would you say they changed or have they?

4. AEA has been a part of Alabama education for a long time. How do you believe that AEA helped you in your career? What would be your advice to educators who are considering dropping their membership? Or what would be your advice to AEA leadership?

5. If you could speak to the educators of today, what advice would you give to them?

6. Other comment of your choice.

Please submit your responses by November 8th so that all responses can be compiled into a presentation. THANK YOU for participating and being part of “The VOICE of Etowah Education Retirees.”
